In today's edition, the 1990 Ice open the Turner Cup Final, the 1982 Checkers put themselves one game away from a title with Red Laurence's 2OT goal, and we celebrate the birthdays of former IHL Ice Brent Grieve, USHL Ice A.J. Panchenko, Jon Ammerman, Luke McManus and Alex Barron, as well as late former Racer Bruce Greig.
1990: The Ice travel to Muskegon to open the IHL Turner Cup Final, and roll to a 5-2 victory. Craig Channell gets the Ice going with an unassisted goal midway through the first period, and Mike McNeill, Mike Eagles, Sean Williams and Ryan McGill follow with tallies. Four of the Ice's five goals are unassisted -- Dave Bassegio assisted on Eagles' goal. The Ice go 1-9 on the power play, but the Ice PK goes 9-10 and scores two shorthanded goals. Jim Waite stops 22 shots to outduel Bruce Racine in net.
1982: The Checkers win an epic double-overtime game over the Dallas Black Hawks to put themselves on a verge of a championship, winning the game 3-2 and taking a 3-1 lead in the series. Red Laurence beats Ken Ellacott 2:25 into the second OT to give the Checkers the victory. He also assisted on Steve Stoyanovich's goal with 28 seconds left in the second period, which tied the game at 2-2. Kevin Devine also scored for the Checkers. Kelly Hrudey stopped 34 shots in net, including 15 in an eventful third period and nine in the first OT.

Bruce Greig: Left wing who played 21 games for the Racers in their short-lived 1978 final season. He had three goals, seven assists and 64 PIMs. He was a pro hockey veteran, playing primarily in several minor leagues during an 11-year career that spanned 1973-84. He played nine NHL games for the California Golden Seals at the start of the career, and 60 WHA games for the Calgary Cowboys, Cincinnati Stingers and the Racers. He became a powerlifting champion upon retirement from hockey. He was born in High River, Alberta in 1953. He passed away in 2008 at age 54.
Brent Grieve: A left wing who played 97 NHL games for four different franchises, Grieve played 24 games for the Ice in 1995-96, with nine goals and 10 assists. It came in the midst of a seven-year pro career in which he split time between the NHL and AHL/IHL, playing for the Islanders, Oilers, Kings and two stints with the Blackhawks. He had 13 of his 20 career NHL goals for Edmonton in 1993-94. He retired after the 1996-97 season. He is now the COO of Cardinal Sports Management in Canada, which assists student-athletes in getting college sports scholarships. A native of Oshawa, Ontario, he is 45.
A.J. Panchenko: One of the original Indiana Ice, he had 13 points and 115 PIMs in 59 games for the team in its inaugural 2004-05 season. He went from there to Div. III St. Thomas, where he had 16 points in four years from his defense position. A native of Eagan, Minn., he is 29.
Jon Ammerman: Defenseman for the Indiana Ice in 2005-06. He had three assists in 25 games for the Ice after coming over from Tri-City mid-season. He went from the Ice to a four-year career at St. Cloud State University. A native of Moorhead, Minn., he is 27.
Luke McManus: Defenseman for the Indiana Ice in 2008-09. He had four assists in 19 games, and also played one game during the team's Clark Cup run. He would play the following season in Tri-City, and recently completed his junior year at NCAA Minnesota-Duluth, where he has three career assists. A native of Apple Valley, Minn., he is 24.
Alex Barron: Defenseman for the Indiana Ice for 85 games between 2010-12. He had three goals and 26 assists for the team, and also had two playoff points in the 2011 Clark Cup playoffs. He finished the 2011-12 season in Waterloo, and recently completed his sophomore year at Quinnipiac University, where he has two goals and 13 assists in 68 career games. A native of Glendora, Calif., he is 23.
