This day in Indianapolis hockey history: May 6

The 1982 Checkers take the lead in the Adams Cup Final, the 2009 Ice score three goals in 44 seconds to take command of the Clark Cup Final, and the 2012 Ice play the final game in the pre-renovation Fairgrounds Coliseum. Also, birthday celebrations for former Ice players Bob Bassen and Cheyne Lazar.

2012: The final game in the pre-renovation Fairgrounds Coliseum takes place as the Ice fall 2-1 to the Green Bay Gamblers. The Gamblers sweep the series in three games, getting the go-ahead goal on the power play at 7:44 of the third from Nicholas Schilkey, which would be the final goal in the "old" barn as it had been in its original configuration. Joe Fiala scores the last Ice goal at 12:48 of the second, tying the game at 1-1. The Ice have a late shot to tie the game, but Daniil Tarasov's tip in front of the net goes wide at the buzzer. Jon Gillies makes 22 saves in the loss. 
2009: The Ice score three goals in a 44 second span of the first period, with Shane Berschbach, Ben Albertson and Max Cook doing the honors. Mike Cichy later adds two goals in a dominant 6-0 victory that puts the team on the cusp of a title, with a 2-1 series lead in the Clark Cup Finals. Brett Bennett makes 20 saves. 
1982: Charlie Skjodt and Garth MacGuigan score third-period goals to give the Checkers a 5-4 win over the Dallas Black Hawks in Game 3 of the CHL Adams Cup Final at the Fairgrounds Coliseum. MacGuigan's tally at 8:38 of the period made it a 5-3 game and turned out to be the game-winner. Red Laurence, Kelly Davis and Glen Duncan also scored for the Checkers. Bruce Affleck had three assists. Kelly Hrudey stopped 32 shots.

Happy birthday to ... 
Bob Bassen: Ice center in 1989-90, where he had 22 goals and 32 assists for the Turner Cup champions. He also had 11 points in 12 playoff games during the Turner Cup run. He had been a veteran of four full NHL seasons when he joined hte Ice, and after a year in the IHL, would go on to spend 10 more years as an NHL player. In 765 NHL games, he had 88 goals, 232 points and 1004 PIMs. He spent the longest stints of his career with the Islanders (1985-89) and Blues (1990-94, 1999-2000), although he also played for the Blackhawks, Nordiques , Stars and Flames before retiring in 2000. Bassen is a second-generation Indianapolis player - his father, Hank, played for the Capitols in 1963. Bob is currently the director of alumni relations for the Dallas Stars. A native of Calgary, he is 49. 
Cheyne Lazar: Left wing who played four games for the Ice in 1999-2000. He played two pro seasons after finishing his college career at RIT, tallying 31 points for CHL San Antonio the year before he joined the Ice. A native of Montreal, he is 40.
