This day in Indianapolis hockey history: May 28

Four birthdays on May 28: former Capital Doug McKay, IHL Ice Hugo Belanger, CHL Ice Jared Dumba and USHL Ice Alex Kangas.

Doug McKay: Left wing who played parts of three seasons for the Capitals from 1949-52. He had 25 goals and 47 assists in 150 games with the Caps. He also had two goals and six assists in the Caps' perfect eight-game 1950 Calder Cup run, and played one game in the Stanley Cup playoffs for the eventual champion Red Wings that same year. It would be his only NHL game. He qualified to have his name on the Stanley Cup, but it was omitted because he was not a regular Red Wing. He would later enter coaching, and win the IHL's Turner Cup as the Kalamazoo Wings' head coach in 1980. A native of Hamilton, Ont., he is 85.
Hugo Belanger: Left wing who played two seasons for the Ice from 1993-95. In 141 games with the Ice, he had 43 goals and 40 assists, tallying 20 goals in each of his Ice seasons, his first two minor pro years. He was the Blackhawks' eighth-round pick in 1990. He would have a huge season with ECHL Nashville the year after leaving the Ice, tallying 54 goals and 90 assists in 67 games, and would be a consistent 30 (and often 40) goal scorer in the ECHL, WCHL and UHL before retiring in 2008. A native of St. Hubert, Que., he is 44.
Jared Dumba: Left wing who played two seasons for the Ice from 2002-04. He had 53 goals and 60 assists in 107 games. He also had 10 goals and six assists in 13 playoff games. After playing his first two pro seasons in Britain in 1998-2000, he came to the CHL late in the 1999-2000 season and made a home, first in Oklahoma City, then with the Ice, and later in Austin, OKC again, and with UHL Flint. He had seven consecutive 20-goal seasons, and scored 19 goals in the eighth year. A native of Dysart, Sask., he is 35.
Alex Kangas: Ice goaltender in 2006-07, he was 19-19-5 with a 3.31 GAA in 46 games. He helped lead the Ice to six straight playoff wins and a berth in the semifinals of an experimental USHL playoff format. He had one shutout as an Iceman, as well. He went from the Ice to the University of Minnesota, where he played four seasons, and he has played 13 minor pro games with the Fort Wayne Komets and ECHL Alaska Aces. A native of Rochester, Minn., he is 27.
