This day in Indianapolis hockey history: May 23

Three May 23 birthdays: former Capital Vic Stasiuk and former IHL Ice Gary Moscaluk and Jeff Buchanan.

Happy birthday to ...
Vic Stasiuk: Left wing who played eight games for the Capitals in 1951-52, having been sent down briefly by the Red Wings. He made a quick impact, scoring seven goals and assisting on one. Stasiuk didn't stay long in the AHL, though. He was in his fourth NHL season when he came to the Caps, having been traded from Chicago to Detroit in the summer of 1950. A strong defensive forward, he was dealt to the Boston Bruins in 1955, putting together four straight 20-goal seasons from 1956-60, skating with Johnny Bucyk and Bronco Horvath on the "Uke Line." The trio became the first line in hockey to have three 20-goal scorers in 1958. Stasiuk went back to the Red Wings in 1960-61, and became a player-coach in the AHL and later the CHL in 1963. He scored 183 goals in 745 NHL games. He spent parts of four seasons as an NHL head coach in Philadelphia, Oakland and Vancouver. A native of Lethbridge, Alberta, he is 85.
Gary Moscaluk: Defenseman who played 31 games for the Ice in 1989-90. He had four assists and 30 PIM. He played two minor pro seasons -- the previous year with the Blackhawks' IHL affiliate in Saginaw and his 31 games for the Ice. A native of Waskatneau, Alb., he is 47.
Jeff Buchanan: Defenseman who played 102 games for the Ice from 1994-96. He had seven goals and 23 assists, as well as 340 penalty minutes. Buchanan was an IHL mainstay in the 1990s, playing for Atlanta, Detroit, Kansas City and Orlando in the league from 1992-98. He won the Turner Cup with Atlanta in 1993. He played his final pro season in 1998-99 in the AHL with Hershey, getting a brief six-game callup to the Colorado Avalanche, before retiring to become a financial consultant. A native of Swift Current, Sask., he is 43.
