This day in Indianapolis hockey history: May 21

Four birthdays on May 21: former Chief Lou Dietrich, IHL Ice Gary Stewart and Todd White, and CHL Ice Jonathan Sorg.

Happy birthday to ...
Lou Dietrich: Defenseman who played for the Chiefs in 1958-59, finishing the season with them after coach Leo Lamoureux brought him back from Sault Ste. Marie. He had played the four previous seasons in the IHL, winning the Turner Cup with the powerful Cincinnati Mohawks in 1957. A native of Waterloo, Ont., he was born in 1932.
Gary Stewart: Defenseman who played 48 games for the Ice in 1988-89, with one goal, 14 assists and 103 PIM. He played six pro seasons from 1984-91, predominately in the IHL where he routinely amassed triple-digit penalty minutes. He retired after the 1991 season in the ECHL. A native of New Westminster, BC, he is 50.
Todd White: High-scoring center who had a standout rookie pro season for the Ice in 1997-98. In 65 games, he had 46 goals and 36 assists. He also had two goals and three assists in five playoff games that year -- including an OT goal in Game 4 to extend the season. He would play seven games for the Blackhawks and score his first NHL goal that season. He played 653 NHL games with the Blackhawks, Flyers, Senators, Wild, Thrashers and Rangers before retiring in 2011. He had 141 goals and 381 points, including three 20-goal seasons at the height of the "dead puck era." He played in the 2003 Eastern Conference Final with the Senators, a year in which he hit his NHL career high with 25 goals. In his last season, he was dealt to the Rangers in exchange for Bedford, Indiana-born Donald Brashear. A native of Kanata, Ontario -- where the Senators play their home games -- he is 39.
Jonathan Sorg: Defenseman who played for the Ice in 2001-02. He had six goals and 21 assists in 64 games that season. It was the lone CHL season among his six pro seasons, also spent in the AHL, WCHL and ECHL. His highest-scoring year was his last -- a 34-point year with WCHL Bakersfield in 2003. A native of Branchville, NJ, he is now coaching hockey in his home state. He is 40.
