Today in history: June 1

We'll have another item for "Today in History" in the future as we'll add the Ice's hiring of new coach/GM Kyle Wallack to the list in the future.
Some birthdays today
Larry Zeidel: Defenseman who played 43 games for the Capitals in their final 1951-52 season, breaking into professional hockey. He had a 6-17-23 line, and eventually earned the callup to Detroit that year and was part of the Stanley Cup championship Red Wings team. Zeidel spent most of his career in the AHL, but likely has one of the longest gaps between NHL stints. After playing 64 games in Chicago in 1953-54, He was called the "fastest stick in the Midwest" largely because of his tough guy reputation. Zeidel is well-known for a stick-swinging incident with Boston's Eddie Shack later in his career, which reportedly began with a racial slur aimed at Zeidel -- who is Jewish. Zeidel spent the next 13 years in the American and Western Hockey Leagues -- primarily in Hershey, although he did win the 1964 Calder Cup with Cleveland. When the NHL expanded to 12 teams in 1967, he played two years with the Philadelphia Flyers, coming back into the NHL at age 39. In total, he played 158 NHL games, scoring three goals and adding 16 assists. A native of Montreal, he is 83.
John Baldassari: One of a handful of Indiana natives to play professionally in his home state, the Fort Wayne native played one game for the Checkers in 1984-85 -- their first IHL season. He had a goal and seven penalty minutes in that contest. He played most of that year in the Atlantic Coast Hockey League. He played a couple more seasons, including his final year in 1986-87 with his hometown Komets. He is 48.
Chris Bonvie: Center who played one game for the Ice in 2000-01, splitting time that season with Fayetteville. The former Bowling Green Falcon played 29 professional games between 1999-2001. A native of Athabasca, Alberta, he is 33.
Ryan Scott: A big -- 6-6, 235-pound -- defenseman who played three years with the Ice from 2005-08. He had five goals and five assists in 101 games. The team's tough guy, he tallied 337 penalty minutes in those three seasons. He also had a playoff goal in that time. He was dealt to Omaha partway through the 2007-08 season. A native of Arvada, Colorado, he is 24.
