Today in history: May 14

Championship heroics on this date.

1982: The Checkers beat Dallas 5-1 at the Coliseum to win the Adams Cup Finals in six games. Kelly Hrudey is named playoff MVP. Red Laurence scores his ninth and 10th goals of the playoffs, while Steve Stoyanovich has a goal and an assist and Bruce Affleck two assists. Three second-period goals – two by Laurence – make the difference. The Chex went 11-2 during the entire playoff run.
1990: The Ice win the Turner Cup, beating Muskegon 2-1. Jim Waite backstops the victory, while Sean Williams scores the championship-winning goal. 6,003 are in attendance – an Ice playoff record – as the team parades the Cup around the Coliseum, and around town in a legendary evening of partying. The Ice were dominant throughout the playoffs, going 12-2 en route to the title.
