Today in history: April 10


It's April 10. Today in Indianapolis hockey history: 

1983: The Checkers explode for eight goals in an 8-3 victory over Salt Lake in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series. Red Laurence scores a hat trick and adds two assists – a five-point night and the team’s second straight hat trick. Scott Howson had three assists. The team would go on to win the Adams Cup. 
2003: The Ice drop a 2-1 double-OT decision to the Memphis RiverKings at the Coliseum, putting them down 3-0 in their best-of-7 CHL Eastern Conference semifinal series. Memphis would finish the sweep two days later. 
2009: Brett Bennett stops 37 shots, Brent Gwidt scores twice and the Ice beat Cedar Rapids 7-2, launching their run to the Clark Cup title in the opening game of the USHL playoffs. 

Birthdays
Rob Brown: Played 19 games for the Ice in 1992-93 and was very prolific, scoring 14 goals and adding 19 assists in that stretch. Brown is also a veteran of 540 NHL games with the Penguins, Whalers, Blackhawks, Stars and Kings. In 1989, he had a 115-point season with the Penguins. Born in Kingston, Ontario, he is now 43 years old. 
Mike Beck: Defenseman who played 56 games for the USHL Ice in 2004-05, with five goals and 20 assists. He recently completed a four-year career at the University of New Hampshire. A native of Long Beach, California, he turns 25 today.
Mile Phillippi: Played 108 games for the USHL Ice from 2005-07, totaling 56 points before a career at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. A native of Shoreview, MN, he turns 24 today.
